How Lake Toba Cleaned Up Its Hippie Backpackers

Dec 12, 2012 by Daniel McBane 13 Comments

Lake Toba Magic Mushrooms

This sign was found in the village of Tuk Tuk on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, which is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Laundry services and magic mushrooms might seem like a strange combination, but the stores here basically offer whatever people want and I’m guessing those two are the most requested items.

    Hey Daniel:

How about a bit of autobiographical background? How is it that you’re able to travel the world so extensively? Witness protection program?

I’ve finally expanded my about page to include more than three sentences and you can read a bit about my background there; but basically, I work along the way and spend very little.

Blogging might not be the most appropriate pastime for someone in witness protection. That said, if they were inclined to blog they’d definitely want to follow my lead and keep the number of readers to an absolute minimum.

Forget Lake Toba, come to Goa, the last bastion of hippy backpacking. India is the only country apart from a few others where marijuana is still available operated by government shops in Varanasi.

I love Goa. I ended up staying for a month and a half, although I mostly stayed away from the hippie beaches–there’s a limit to how much exposure to them a person can take and I’ve learned my limit is pretty low.

I never saw any shops in Varanasi (heard about them though), but I did see a government Bhang shop in Jaisalmer, just outside the fort.

Only four readers? I stopped blogging because I could not get a dozen….are you earning any monye with it? Too, bad that Indonesian islands have been corrupted by so much tourism…and backpackers who have no idea in whch context they are living…dressed in tatters…
